A Fairytale Cottage in Yorkshire

Enjoying a long weekend away at this time of year is such a treat. In order to maximise our time away in Nidderdale, we stopped off en route in Ripon; a place we’d not visited before. What an attractive market town it is, with an array of independent shops. While we were there, looking for somewhere for lunch, we happened across W Benson’s hardware shop. Although the ground floor is a hardware shop, deceptively, the first floor boasts one of the best selections of Barbour and Joules coats and jackets – and Hunter wellies – in the North of England. Not only did they have everything on our Christmas lists, they also recommended a great place for us to have lunch: now that’s what I call great customer service. ... Full story

Yes, that’s right – Hull! ... Full story

Remember The Night The Sky Lit Up!

Usually misguided and failed plans are not something one would hold praises for but Guy Fawkes is one of the exceptions to that rule. Failure can mostly be looked at as an opportunity to try harder and better or, in the worst scenario, fail better. No such chance for this Guy, though... As a member of the Gunpowder Plot conspiracy which sought to overthrow the ruling King James I and the soon-to-be new Parliament, a cunning plan was erected so as to literally blow up both prominent figures and create an uprising of English Catholics, who at the time were terrible dissatisfied by the latest penal laws applied to the practice of their religion; such uprising, they hoped, would spur a radical change of the current state of affairs. However, the plan proved to be very unlucky, to say the least. ... Full story
